Old Swan Hotel

Day 1: Arrival at the Old Swan Hotel and Agatha Christie Talk

Arrive independently at The Old Swan Hotel from 15.00.

This evening, there will be a welcome reception, a private dinner with wine and talk by Jane Tapley.

Turkish baths

Day 2: Harrogate, Turkish Baths and Murder Mystery Dinner

This morning depart the hotel on foot for the short walk to the Turkish Baths. On arrival there will be a guided tour of these unique Victorian Baths. They are one of the most historically complete Turkish Baths and remain in full working order (only seven remain in total from the Victorian Period). They are exquisitely decorated with Moorish designs, vibrant glazed brickwork and painted ceilings. They were also used for the filming of ‘Agatha’ a film detailing Agatha Christie’s disappearance.

Afterwards, there will be a visit to the Royal Pump Room Museum. Lunch will be at leisure (not included), where you can enjoy one of the many restaurants and cafes in Harrogate, including the famous Betty’s tearooms.

In the afternoon there will be a walking tour with a local guide exploring Harrogate, its history and what the town would have been like during Agatha’s stay. Return to the hotel late afternoon. In the evening there will be a private dinner with murder mystery performance at the hotel; join the Detective team and crack the case with Inspector Rutherford.

Please note: There is no coach service on Day 2, and we include a 2-hour walking tour of Harrogate, which follows a gentle route with limited places to sit down.

Newby Hall

Day 3: Newby Hall, Country Pub Lunch and Departure

This morning, depart the hotel by coach for the beautiful Newby Hall, one of Britain’s finest Adam Houses. The original house was built in 1690 by Sir Christopher Wren and then enlarged and adapted by John Carr and subsequently by Robert Adam. On arrival there will be tea and coffee before enjoying a private guided tour of the house. The house, still the family home of Mr and Mrs Richard Compton has been used as a set for various film and television including the recent BBC adaptation of the ABC Murders.

After the tour of the house we will travel to Brearton for an included lunch at the Malt Shovel Pub, a quaint 16th century country village pub with a rustic feel where we can all discuss our own theories about Agatha’s mysterious disappearance.

This afternoon we will take a leisurely drive through the Yorkshire countryside on our way back to the hotel. Return to the hotel for approx. 16:00.

Please note: There are staircases at Newby Hall which are included on the guided tour.

The Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate
The Old Swan Hotel combines Victorian splendour with elegant contemporary style. The hotel has stunning period features and elegant reception rooms. There is a restaurant with its original glass ceiling and the Swan Lounge and Bar which offers views over the lawn and town centre. The rooms are spacious and traditionally decorated and feature tea/coffee making facilities, flat screen televisions, Wi-Fi and many other amenities.

Parking is available at the hotel on a first come basis, it cannot be pre booked. There is a £10 per day charge payable directly to the hotel. Harrogate railway station is a 15 minute walk or 5 minute taxi ride from the hotel.

Simply complete our online booking form or give us a call on 020 7251 0045 between 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday where you can speak to a real person. A 20% deposit per person is required at the time of booking, to book your place. Payments by debit card or credit card incur no charge. 

You must pay for the balance of your holiday at least 12 weeks before departure. Please note: no reminder for balance payments is sent to you and are not receipted unless requested. If you book your holiday within 12 weeks of departure, full payment is required at time of booking. Please note that some tours may require final payment to be paid earlier than 12 weeks, due to financial commitment with suppliers. The exact date will be notified to you at the time of booking. Final joining instructions and documentation will be dispatched approximately 10 days before travel.

In almost all cases, the price includes your accommodation, meals as described in the itinerary, all excursions shown in the programme, and travel arrangements from the UK. Excursions are taken by private coach exclusively for Travel Editions guests. If anything is ever excluded from the price, it will be clearly marked as optional and payable locally, you won’t find any hidden extras on your final bill. Travel Editions operates a firm no-surcharge policy, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

The specifics vary by tour and are set out in your individual itinerary, but most of our tours depart from London, either by Eurostar from St Pancras International or by air. For rail tours, we advise allowing at least one hour before the Eurostar departure when planning your journey to London. For flights, all costs are based on economy class unless otherwise stated, and all times shown are local time. For tours in the UK, these often start at the hotel in question.

Flight upgrades and connections from regional airports are available on request and subject to availability, contact us on 020 7251 0045 or at tours@traveleditions.co.uk for details. We strongly recommend not booking non-refundable connecting travel until you have received your final joining instructions, which are sent around 10 days before departure and confirm all timings and meeting points.

Yes, and you’re very welcome. Single room supplements apply on most tours, reflecting the fact that single and double rooms are generally priced similarly by hotels. If you would prefer to share with another solo traveller of the same gender, we are happy to arrange this, simply let us know at the time of booking. Sharing is subject to another traveller in the same situation being booked on the same tour.
