Javier Méndez

Javier Méndez is a professional ornithologist, naturalist and highly experienced wildlife guide who has been sharing his knowledge with birdwatchers, botanical groups, walkers and nature enthusiasts since 2001. Born and raised in Menorca, Javier’s fascination with the natural world began in childhood and has developed into a lifelong commitment to studying, protecting and interpreting wildlife.

Javier is a founding member of the Societat Ornitològica de Menorca and served for several years as its Secretary General. He is also associated with the Institut Menorquí d’Estudis and has contributed extensively to the understanding of Menorca’s birds and other vertebrates through field research, monitoring projects and published studies. His work includes The Winter Atlas of the Birds of Menorca 2007–11, The Breeding Bird Atlas of the Albufera des Grau Natural Park and research into the island’s breeding birds. His wider natural-history interests have also led him to study species including Menorca’s distinctive pine marten population.

Through Menorca Walking Birds, Javier introduces visitors to the island’s birds, flora, landscapes and lesser-known natural places. His expertise extends well beyond identifying individual species: he helps travellers understand habitats, migration, conservation and the relationships between wildlife and the surrounding landscape. This broad knowledge makes him an engaging guide for guests with varied interests and levels of experience.

Although Menorca remains Javier’s home and principal area of expertise, he embraced the opportunity to explore northern Greece with Travel Editions. Its rich plant life, varied habitats and remarkable biodiversity immediately captured his imagination, and he is keen to help guests discover what makes the region so special.
