Mike Stone leads Travel Editions history tours through Britain’s archaeology, architecture and historic landscapes as an experienced Blue Badge guide.

Mike Stone

Mike Stone is an archaeologist, historian, author, lecturer and qualified Blue Badge guide who has been leading Travel Editions tours for many years. His wide-ranging knowledge of British archaeology, architecture and historic buildings makes him equally at home exploring ancient sites, medieval castles, royal residences and the landscapes that surround them.

A graduate of the Institute of Archaeology at the University of London, Mike has developed a career that combines research, museum work, writing and guiding. From 2010, he served as manager and curator of Chippenham Museum, helping to interpret and share the history of the town and its surrounding area. He has also taken specialist groups throughout Britain, Europe and North Africa and writes regularly on aspects of archaeology and history.

Mike’s Travel Editions tours reflect the breadth of his interests. In Suffolk, he introduces guests to the Anglo-Saxon world of Sutton Hoo and West Stow, alongside the castles, wool towns and historic buildings that reveal the county’s later story. Elsewhere, his tours explore Roman and medieval South Wales, Stonehenge, Britain’s royal palaces and houses, and the architecture and heritage associated with Queen Victoria.

His training as a Blue Badge guide allows Mike to bring together detailed historical knowledge with the practical experience needed to manage a varied touring programme. Rather than treating buildings and archaeological remains in isolation, he explains how they developed, who used them and what they reveal about the wider society and landscape of their time.

Warm, approachable and highly knowledgeable, Mike has become a familiar and much-valued Travel Editions guide. His lectures and commentary are informative without being overly academic, helping guests see well-known landmarks from a fresh perspective while also discovering the less obvious details and stories that make Britain’s heritage so rewarding to explore.
