Fitness & Mobility

Mobility Information

The aim of every Travel Editions tour is that you come home having thoroughly enjoyed yourself. That means giving you as much practical information as possible about what each itinerary involves, so you can choose a tour that suits you.

Many of the places we visit are rewarding to explore and, in some cases, can be quite physically demanding to navigate. Ancient cobbled streets, medieval staircases, archaeological sites with uneven ground, gardens with gravel paths and historic buildings without lifts are often part of what makes these places special. Most tours also involve boarding a coach or train independently, sometimes with luggage, and spending a fair amount of time on your feet across the day.

What you will find on each tour page

Every itinerary carries a fitness rating, but we also aim to flag specific practical details directly in the day-by-day itinerary – the kind of information that makes a real difference when deciding whether a tour is right for you. If a cathedral has 200 steps with no lift, we say so. If a visit involves steep paths, extended walking between sections or significantly uneven ground, we note it as clearly as we can. The aim is to give you an accurate picture of what a day on that particular tour actually looks like.

This does not necessarily mean the whole tour is unsuitable, but it may help you decide whether to sit out a particular visit, choose a gentler itinerary, or call us before booking. Where practical, you may be able to opt out of all or part of a day if you feel it could be too challenging, although this will depend on the location, facilities and timing of the visit. Our reservations team can answer any questions about this before you choose to book.

Things to consider before booking

Unless a tour page states otherwise, guests on most Travel Editions tours should generally be able to:

• get on and off a coach or train independently
• walk at a steady group pace
• stand for periods of time during guided visits
• manage steps, stairs or slopes where lifts are not available
• walk short distances from coach drop-off points to sites or entrances
• handle your own luggage when required, particularly at airports, stations and hotels
• manage a full day of visits, which may include early starts, several stops, or limited opportunities to sit down

Historic buildings, churches, museums, gardens and archaeological sites are not always designed with modern access in mind. Some may have cobbles, uneven paving, narrow staircases, low lighting, gravel paths, grass, mud, slopes, or few places to rest.

Our tour managers and local guides are there to manage the itinerary and support the group, but unfortunately, they cannot provide one-to-one mobility assistance. If you require regular assistance with walking, steps, getting on or off transport, or managing luggage, please speak to us before booking so we can advise whether the itinerary is likely to be appropriate. Some tours may not be suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters or walking aids because of historic sites, coach access, steps, cobbles, gravel, steep ground or limited space. Please contact us before booking if this applies to you.

Where we know a particular visit includes these features, we aim to mention this clearly on the tour page.

Our tour gradings

Each Travel Editions tour has a fitness rating to help you understand the general pace and physical nature of the itinerary. These ratings are not just based on walking distance, but also on the amount of standing, the type of ground underfoot, the number of visits in a day, steps and stairs, coach or train access, and how much time is spent travelling between places.

Gentle – A more relaxed pace, with some walking between sites and periods of standing for viewing. Surfaces are generally good underfoot, though occasional steps, slopes or cobbled areas may still be involved. You should be comfortable walking for around 30 minutes at a steady pace and standing unaided during visits.

Moderate – A fuller itinerary with more time on your feet, including walking between sites, standing for longer periods and some uneven surfaces, cobbles, steps or gentle inclines. Some days may involve several visits, coach journeys, or walking from the coach drop-off point to the attraction. You should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable keeping up with a group throughout the day.

Demanding – Busy days, often involving extended time on foot, uneven terrain, cobbled streets, archaeological sites, steep paths, steps, limited seating or few handrails. Some visits may involve walking from the coach to the site, standing for long periods, or navigating historic buildings where lifts are not available. A good level of fitness and mobility is needed to get the most from the tour.

More relaxed-paced tours

Following feedback from our travellers, we have been steadily adding tours designed around a more relaxed pace. These itineraries cover the same depth of subject matter and the same quality of expert guidance – the difference is in the rhythm of the day. If pace is an important consideration for you, our team can advise which tours are likely to be the best fit.

Walking tours

Our dedicated walking tours carry their own grading, reflecting the more active nature of these itineraries:

Moderate – Relatively few hills and manageable terrain. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.

Challenging – More varied terrain with significant elevation – up to 300 or 400 metres in a day. Walking poles are recommended.

Difficult – Substantial hills, with 500 metres of elevation or more in a day, and demanding ground underfoot. Good boots and poles are essential, and a solid level of fitness is required before booking.

Choosing the right tour

We know that mobility and fitness vary from person to person, and that a grading can only ever be a guide. One traveller may be comfortable walking all day but find standing still difficult; another may manage museums easily but prefer to avoid cobbles, stairs or steep paths.

If you are unsure, please contact us before booking. The more we know about your requirements, the better we can advise whether a particular itinerary is likely to suit you.

Not sure? Give us a call.
