Widely known as ‘Dr Enigma’, Mark is an international expert and professional speaker on the Enigma machine, Second World War codebreaking and the history of cryptography. A Cambridge engineering graduate, he began his career on a variety of engineering projects before enrolling at Imperial College London on a Master’s course, during which he was head-hunted to lecture in the Civil Engineering Department. He spent 15 years in university teaching and gained his PhD.
Alongside his academic career, Mark and his wife established a specialist bookselling and publishing business. A chance encounter with a book on wartime naval intelligence sparked what became a lasting fascination with codebreaking and cryptography. Over the following two decades he researched not only the machine’s technical operation, but also the remarkable human story of the people who designed, used and ultimately broke its codes.
Mark has since become one of the world’s most experienced speakers on Second World War intelligence. He has delivered more than 700 presentations and demonstrations to over 60,000 people across the UK and internationally, addressing audiences ranging from historical societies and academic seminars to major technology conferences. His wider expertise encompasses Bletchley Park, the history of cryptography and the work of the Special Operations Executive.
A particular highlight of Mark’s presentations is his use of a genuine wartime Enigma machine. Travellers can see how its rotors, plugboard and electrical circuits transformed ordinary messages into apparently impenetrable ciphertext, while also discovering the ingenuity, persistence and international cooperation required to overcome it.
