History of Travel Editions

Thirty Years of Going The Extra Mile

History of Travel Editions

Travel Editions was founded in 1994 on a single conviction: that the best holidays are built around knowledge. Not knowledge as a footnote, but as the very reason for travelling. The kind of knowledge that transforms a beautiful building into a story, a vineyard into a living history, a coastline into something you carry home long after the tan has faded.

From those early days, we set out to be a different kind of tour operator. Not a tick-list travel company, but a genuinely specialist outfit with the ambition to create experiences for travellers, not tourists. Itineraries you simply would not find on the high street. Thirty years on, that conviction has never wavered.

Where It All Began

The company grew from a shared belief among its founders that there was a clear gap in the market: curious, culturally engaged travellers who wanted someone knowledgeable to guide them and someone reliable to handle everything else.

Our first tours were modest in scale but ambitious in spirit, drawing on a network of expert guides, academic specialists, and informed local contacts who could bring a destination to life in ways no guidebook ever quite manages. The response from our earliest travellers told us we were on the right track, and a loyal following began to build, one that has stayed with us ever since.

Within two years, we launched our private groups department, beginning with a single trip to Venice in 1996. What started as one group itinerary has since grown into an award-winning operation, creating bespoke tours for clubs, societies, arts organisations, and groups of friends.

Developing Our Tours

Through the late 1990s and into the 2000s, the programme expanded steadily to reflect the breadth of our travellers’ interests. Rail travel became one of our signature offerings: we introduced our first rail holiday to Provence via Eurostar and TGV more than 25 years ago, recognising early that the journey itself can be as rewarding as the destination.

New themes brought new experts. Garden tours, walking holidays, food and wine experiences, music, history, archaeology, the arts. Each strand of the programme connected our travellers with the historians, art historians, naturalists, curators, and writers who remain the heartbeat of a Travel Editions tour to this day.

Our tour managers have been just as central to the experience. Many have been with us for years, and some of our travellers have come to plan their year around a favourite tour manager’s schedule. We think they are among the best in the business, and the feedback we receive from our travellers suggests they agree.

Staying True, Going Further

The past decade has seen us extend our reach without compromising our character. Tours to Greece, Scandinavia, South Africa, and beyond have joined the programme alongside our enduring UK and European itineraries, each one curated with the same attention to depth and detail that has always defined us.

We have also worked to ensure our tours remain genuinely welcoming. Small groups of like-minded individuals, carefully chosen hotels, clear and honest pricing, and a reservations team of real people on hand during office hours with no automated telephone lines to navigate. A high proportion of our travellers are solo travellers, and they will always find a warm welcome on a Travel Editions tour.

Today we offer more than 180 escorted tours, yet the company retains the feel of a specialist rather than a volume operator. Our repeat booking rate, consistently high across more than three decades, is the recommendation we value most.

Looking Ahead

The travel world has changed considerably since 1994, and we have changed with it. But some things remain constant: our commitment to expert-led cultural experiences, our investment in the people who deliver them, and our belief that a truly well-designed tour can change the way you see the world.

We are proud of the history we have built, and more excited than ever about what comes next.

Your questions answered

FAQs

If you have a question, we are more than happy to answer it via email or phone, but you may find your answer below more quickly.

Simply complete our online booking form or give us a call on 020 7251 0045 between 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday where you can speak to a real person. A 20% deposit per person is required at the time of booking, to book your place. Payments by debit card or credit card incur no charge.

You must pay for the balance of your holiday at least 12 weeks before departure. Please note: no reminder for balance payments is sent to you and are not receipted unless requested. If you book your holiday within 12 weeks of departure, full payment is required at time of booking. Please note that some tours may require final payment to be paid earlier than 12 weeks, due to financial commitment with suppliers. The exact date will be notified to you at the time of booking. Final joining instructions and documentation will be dispatched approximately 10 days before travel.

In almost all cases, the price includes your accommodation, meals as described in the itinerary, all excursions shown in the programme, and travel arrangements from the UK. Excursions are taken by private coach exclusively for Travel Editions guests. If anything is ever excluded from the price, it will be clearly marked as optional and payable locally, you won’t find any hidden extras on your final bill. Travel Editions operates a firm no-surcharge policy, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

The specifics vary by tour and are set out in your individual itinerary, but most of our tours depart from London, either by Eurostar from St Pancras International or by air. For rail tours, we advise allowing at least one hour before the Eurostar departure when planning your journey to London. For flights, all costs are based on economy class unless otherwise stated, and all times shown are local time. For tours in the UK, these often start at the hotel in question.

Flight upgrades and connections from regional airports are available on request and subject to availability, contact us on 020 7251 0045 or at tours@traveleditions.co.uk for details. We strongly recommend not booking non-refundable connecting travel until you have received your final joining instructions, which are sent around 10 days before departure and confirm all timings and meeting points.

Yes, and you’re very welcome. Single room supplements apply on most tours, reflecting the fact that single and double rooms are generally priced similarly by hotels. If you would prefer to share with another solo traveller of the same gender, we are happy to arrange this, simply let us know at the time of booking. Sharing is subject to another traveller in the same situation being booked on the same tour.

Each tour is accompanied by a dedicated tour manager, who in most cases will travel out from the UK with the group. On some tours, the tour manager will meet you at your destination station or airport, with full details being confirmed in your joining instructions 10 days before travel. Many of our tours are also led by expert lecturers or specialist guides whose knowledge brings each destination to life; details of who will be accompanying your particular tour are included in the individual tour pages and itineraries.
