Agatha Christie On The English Riviera With Lucy Worsley

We follow Agatha Christie’s Devon connections from Torquay and Greenway to Burgh Island, where the setting helped inspire And Then There Were None and Evil Under the Sun. The tour brings together Jane Tapley’s literary guidance, a murder mystery evening and a Burgh Island lunch with a talk, Q&A and book signing from Lucy Worsley.

Our base at the Grand Hotel in Torquay adds a personal connection to Christie’s story, as this was where she stayed on her wedding night. From here, the tour considers the places, people and atmosphere that shaped her life and writing.

The balance of literary insight, historic setting and sociable elements gives the tour its character, with time to enjoy the locations as well as consider their place in Christie’s enduring appeal.

Learn more about the highlights you’ll experience, the unforgettable places you’ll visit, and the unique moments that bring each destination to life.

Day 1: Arrival in Torquay and Agatha Christie: Queen of Crime

Arrive independently at The Grand Hotel, Torquay from 15.00.

This evening there will be a welcome reception, private dinner with wine and a talk, ‘Agatha Christie – Queen of Crime’ from Jane Tapley.

Day 2: Torquay, Greenway and Murder on the Riviera

A guided tour this morning of Torquay with Jane Tapley, who will show you some of the sights on the “Agatha Christie Mile” including our hotel, where Agatha spent her honeymoon night with Archie Christie on Christmas Eve 1914, the Princess Gardens, the Princess Pier and ending at Torre Abbey for a visit to the spectacular gardens and a talk from the Head Gardener of ‘Agatha Christie Potent Plants’.

Then it’s off to Greenway, her country holiday home she called “the loveliest place in the world”, which is full of memorabilia.

Day 3: Dartmouth and the Moorlands Hotel

This morning we will head to lovely Dartmouth on the River Dart where a leisurely stroll will whet your appetite for lunch at the Moorlands Hotel, where Agatha wrote her first book, “The Mysterious Affair at Styles.”

Return to Torquay for free time to explore independently. Evening at leisure.

Day 4: Burgh Island and Lunch with Lucy Worsley

A lovely day in prospect as we head to the iconic Burgh Island Hotel, a former haunt of Agatha Christie, Noel Coward and other luminaries of the 1930s. Built in 1929 and restored to its 1930s Art Deco glamour, Burgh Island is reached by sea tractor at high tide or on foot when the tide is out.

Time will be allowed to explore the island which has lovely footpaths, the hotel itself and its delightful pub, the Pilchard Inn, for a pre-lunch drink. Lunch will be served in the hotel dining room with wine included.

A talk and Q&A with acclaimed historian and writer, Lucy Worsley will enhance the visit – she will also be on hand to sign copies of her book (included in the tour price). Return to the hotel in Torquay for approximately 17.30.

“A very enjoyable holiday done at a reasonable pace each day. Jane, our guide, was excellent as was Lucy Worsley. Both gave excellent talks and mingled well with the guests on tour. We may well choose another similar tour next year..”

Tour Accommodation

Grand Hotel, Torquay
Where Agatha Christie spent her honeymoon night, the Grand has been a Torquay landmark for more than a century dominating the seafront above Corbyn Beach. Perhaps less grand today than its heyday, it still exudes period atmosphere and has a bar, restaurant, gym, spa and indoor and outdoor swimming pool (seasonal opening). Bedrooms are somewhat old-fashioned but comfortable with all modern amenities including en-suite bathroom, TV, telephone, wifi, safe, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities.

The hotel offers some car parking spaces in the Grand Garage for £10 per car, per night which must be pre-booked direct with the hotel. There is also limited free parking spaces on the public street outside the hotel, but these are available on a first-come first-served basis and cannot be reserved. We recommend that parking is pre-booked either with the hotel, or alternatively at a nearby parking space using a parking app for best availability and rates.

Torquay train station is located a 2 minute walk from the hotel.

Tour FAQ

If you have a question, we are more than happy to answer it via email or phone, but you may find your answer below more quickly.

Simply complete our online booking form or give us a call on 020 7251 0045 between 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday where you can speak to a real person. A 20% deposit per person is required at the time of booking, to book your place. Payments by debit card or credit card incur no charge.

You must pay for the balance of your holiday at least 12 weeks before departure. Please note: no reminder for balance payments is sent to you and are not receipted unless requested. If you book your holiday within 12 weeks of departure, full payment is required at time of booking. Please note that some tours may require final payment to be paid earlier than 12 weeks, due to financial commitment with suppliers. The exact date will be notified to you at the time of booking. Final joining instructions and documentation will be dispatched approximately 10 days before travel.

In almost all cases, the price includes your accommodation, meals as described in the itinerary, all excursions shown in the programme, and travel arrangements from the UK. Excursions are taken by private coach exclusively for Travel Editions guests. If anything is ever excluded from the price, it will be clearly marked as optional and payable locally, you won’t find any hidden extras on your final bill. Travel Editions operates a firm no-surcharge policy, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

The specifics vary by tour and are set out in your individual itinerary, but most of our tours depart from London, either by Eurostar from St Pancras International or by air. For rail tours, we advise allowing at least one hour before the Eurostar departure when planning your journey to London. For flights, all costs are based on economy class unless otherwise stated, and all times shown are local time. For tours in the UK, these often start at the hotel in question.

Flight upgrades and connections from regional airports are available on request and subject to availability, contact us on 020 7251 0045 or at tours@traveleditions.co.uk for details. We strongly recommend not booking non-refundable connecting travel until you have received your final joining instructions, which are sent around 10 days before departure and confirm all timings and meeting points.

Yes, and you’re very welcome. Single room supplements apply on most tours, reflecting the fact that single and double rooms are generally priced similarly by hotels. If you would prefer to share with another solo traveller of the same gender, we are happy to arrange this, simply let us know at the time of booking. Sharing is subject to another traveller in the same situation being booked on the same tour.

Each tour is accompanied by a dedicated tour manager, who in most cases will travel out from the UK with the group. On some tours, the tour manager will meet you at your destination station or airport, with full details being confirmed in your joining instructions 10 days before travel. Many of our tours are also led by expert lecturers or specialist guides whose knowledge brings each destination to life; details of who will be accompanying your particular tour are included in the individual tour pages and itineraries.
