Luís Gonçalves

Luís Gonçalves is an experienced Algarve nature guide and the founder a specialist nature-tourism company based in Olhão. Born and raised in the Algarve, he has spent much of his life exploring the region on foot and developing a detailed understanding of its landscapes, wildlife, plants and cultural history.

His interest in the natural world began at an early age and has been strengthened through years of walking, hiking, camping, scuba diving and birdwatching across the Algarve. This first-hand experience has given him a broad knowledge of the region’s varied habitats, from wetlands and coastal lagoons to cork-oak country, limestone hills and Mediterranean scrub. He is also a long-standing member of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds, Portugal’s BirdLife International partner.

Before becoming a full-time nature guide, Luís completed a degree in Food Engineering and worked in food safety, quality and production management within both the food and cork industries. He continued researching the Algarve’s natural heritage alongside his professional career before moving into the tourism industry. Luís specialises in guided walks and the interpretation of the Algarve’s natural and cultural assets, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, conservation and responsible access to sensitive environments.

Already a firm favourite with Travel Editions’ travellers, Luís brings far more than local knowledge to each tour. He helps guests understand how the region’s flora, fauna, geology, architecture, traditions and history are connected, while also ensuring that each day is enjoyable, informative and well paced.

His deep personal connection to the Algarve, combined with his enthusiasm for sharing its lesser-known places, allows guests to see beyond the familiar holiday resorts and discover a region of exceptional biodiversity, distinctive landscapes and enduring local character.
