Bernard Lockett

A lifelong Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiast, Bernard is an author, speaker and Trustee of the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. His talks and introductions offer travellers an engaging way into the works, their creators and the remarkable theatrical tradition that has grown around them.

Bernard has been closely involved with the Festival and the wider Gilbert and Sullivan world for many years. His particular interests include the background to the operas, their social and political satire and their distinctive place within Britain’s theatrical heritage. Through his talks, he explores how W. S. Gilbert’s sharp observations of Victorian society were strengthened by Arthur Sullivan’s music, creating works that remain entertaining, recognisable and surprisingly relevant today.

An experienced lecturer, Bernard has spoken to audiences at festivals, theatres, literary societies and arts organisations across the country. He has also broadcast on Gilbert and Sullivan for BBC Radio 2, Radio 3 and Radio 4, as well as appearing on BBC television.

Bernard is the author of two books connected with Gilbert and Sullivan. His historical novel Here’s a State of Things intertwines the lives of two sets of London characters, a hundred years apart, both connected with the Savoy Operas and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.
